Aptly named after the 151 square miles of shallow saltwater heaven stretching to the horizon off the south shore of Long Island, New York, Great south bay brewing has been turning out a wide variety of classic beers. When it comes to Bay brews, it’s not about how much we can make; it’s about how much better we can make it. It’s not about how fast we can turn it out, but about how fast the smile appears on your face when you taste it. All of our beers are craft brewed from scratch – with all malt, regional water, no preservatives and no additives – using recipes that have been endlessly tinkered with and processes that are meticulously executed. What surfaces is a mouthful of unique flavor characteristics not common to any other beers. But don’t take our word for it – the proof is in the pint!

Famous Last Words
Steve’s love for great beer started over 20 years ago when he and a friend began home brewing. Within the last 4 years, his passion for brewing took the next step. In 2009, Steve and his wife decided to create a family room out of a small existing room and the garage in their home. In this family room, Steve built a 16 foot Bar with two taps, and decided to brew some beer for those taps. Once the bar and family room were completed, they threw a get together for some friends. Everyone raved about Steve’s beer and encouraged him to sell it. The family room became a regular stop for friends, and the Bar in the Garage became known as “The Barrage”. In 2010, Barrage Brewing Company was founded.

You could say us Long Islanders are a different breed. But in reality, we’re just people who demand more than the status quo. Where we come from, people don’t take your word for it … until you prove you’re worth listening to. Because we work too hard to put up with any bullshit. Give it to us straight, be proud of what you do, and never apologize for something you believe in. Which is why we’ve made beer that stands up to Long Islander standards. We know it’s good, they know it’s good, and if someone disagrees, that’s not our problem. Yeah, we have humble beginnings. You won’t see us on every store shelf, but that’s the kind of brewery we’ve always been. Hell, our founders tapped Blue Point’s first keg in a parking lot. What it comes down to is that we know our drinkers. They know us. And as long as they agree that we’re making beers they want to drink, we’ll keep brewing on.

Long Ireland began a little differently than most businesses. Two friends, Greg Martin and Dan Burke, got the crazy idea to go out and start a business because they wanted to do something they truly enjoyed: DRINK BEER! Beer, for us, is a hobby-turned-passion-turned-lifestyle. From our early days learning to home-brew in the garage, all the way through our apprenticeship with the New England Brewing company and the opening of our own brewery, brewing beer has been about sharing and creating memorable experiences.

Microbrewery? Nanobrewery! Very small batches of beer craft-brewed in Centerport, Long Island, New York. How small is a very small brewery? Established in 2008 while brewing ten-gallon batches, Blind Bat expanded in 2010 - upgrading from a 1/3-barrel system (10 gallon batches) to a 3-barrel system (93 gallon batches). It had pretty much been a part-time one-man operation while I continued to hold down a regular job, but 2014 and 2015 are a period of transition. Beer had not flowed as regularly as it does with a normal full time brewery, but that is changing as we expand. Besides, what kind of nut tries to startsuch a small brewery? the #1 question so far has been why is it called the Blind Bat Brewery? I happen to be extremely near sighted (without corrective lenses, something will have to be three inches away from my nose to be in focus) as well as colorblind (which can be a challenge to a cartoonist and illustrator)1, so the name became the Blind Bat Brewery instead. Also, if I'm wearing glasses instead of contacts, the brew kettle steams my glasses so much that I can't see.

We want our beers to spark conversation and be enjoyed in the company of friends, family neighbors and acquaintances. Our goal is to utilize our scientific backgrounds and love of beer to craft the perfect pint. The brewing process blends science, technology, new and traditional techniques as well as the the best available ingredients to craft balanced and drinkable beers. Grain, Hops and Yeast are blended together in a way that compliments each individual component. We want to honor the atrisan hop and grain growers, maltsters and yeast propagators. The entire process from ingredient selection to brewing to kegging is done with the purpose of creating an exceptional drinking experience. If the brew doesn't taste right, we wont sell it. It's that simple.
